Brit locked in flat over Bank Holiday couldn't reach pub – until hero stepped in

Nothing beats a trip to the pub on a sunny Bank Holiday weekend.

But one unfortunate Brit's plans were scuppered when they found themselves locked in their flat. Using the username Sepalous, they told Reddit about having a door handle that would not budge regardless of having the keys.

After several solo failed attempts – followed by involving their neighbour who tried to open the door from the opposite side using a different key – they called on the internet for advice.

Redditors who commented didn't exactly provide the most practical advice though. They conjured up solutions for our flummoxed friend.

One offered this piece of wisdom: "If you do get trapped in your flat, try not to get trapped in your flat." Another amusingly advised to "try unlocking it anyway". Another notable suggestion came from a third participant who chimed in with: "Try hitting the case with a mallet from various angles while jigging the handle."

Thankfully, the trapped lad called a locksmith and were saved by an "absolute hero" bearing Allen keys and a toolbox. He stood on top of a wheelie bin, before throwing over the equipment required to break past the stubborn door.

They shared: "The lock was jammed: after realising it wasn't going to open no matter the amount of percussive maintenance performed and getting a neighbour to try the door with a key from the other side, I called a local locksmith."

In threat of having to cancel the much-anticipated pub outing, the locksmith sprung into action quickly. He "had to stand on a wheelie bin" to make his tools accessible to the person stuck inside the flat.

The Redditor added: "He was an absolute hero and later borrowed a ladder from a neighbour to climb in through the window (I live in a Victorian conversion). The bolt had to be angle ground off. The lock has now been replaced, and I'm off to the pub!"
